Dressing for the adult life is incredibly difficult for a woman. I believe that the best place to start is to figure out your own style. As soon as you know who you are, and what you like, it’ll be time to take over the world; one interview and event at a time. As a Style Guru Intern for College Fashionista I hope to help you with this process (my College Fashionista Link if you are interested in reading my other articles)

For this photoshoot, I decided to stick with the basics as a good start.

Start with a nice fitted trouser. If you aren’t comfortable with a skinny fit trouser, try for a slim fit. Although, many fashion magazines are pushing for the revamp of the flared pant leg, slim fit trousers create a beautiful straight line that makesyour legs look longer, and straighter. Black is a good place to start since you’ll be able to match it with everything. Now that you are moving up into your adult life, you should start stocking your closet with some basic pieces like a straight leg black pant. If you can find a pant with a high waist, a tucked in shirt looks fantastic with it. The high waist also helps to hide any unwanted curves, and creates beautiful curves.

If you find a trouser that you really like at a good price, buy 2 pairs of the black, (trust me, you will probably need at least 2) and if you feel adventurous enough get the same pant in multiple colours. if you are only starting to stock your closet, stick to solid and simple colours. good colours to stick with are black, navy, beige, and olive green if you are able to pair it properly.

Look for a pant that hits you right at the ankle. this looks absolutely fantastic with heels, flats and makes it easier to tuck into a cute pair of boots. I am a pretty short girl (not that short!) standing at a tall 5′ 2 1/2 so I personally look for a pant with a short in seam. Look for a store that carries a variety of pant in seams  such as R (regular), L (Long), and S (Short). J. Crew has a pant called the  Martie Pant that is available in an assortment of colours and has in seams in all three lengths. For the shopper with a smaller budget, Old Navy also carries an assortment of work trousers that come in multiple colours and multiple in seams, like their Mid-Rise Rockstar Sateen Pants.

If you feel confident in your style, look for pants with an extra edgy embellishment. Just like this adorable one!

As we make our way to tops, I believe that you should start with a very basic top, that has nice little accents on it. I once spoke to a professional stylist who recommended embellishments or a large statement necklace during an interview (if you are going for something like investment banking, then please do not wear a large statement necklace. You should be wearing something strong like a power suit) so that you will be remembered. Moving into your adult life, I believe that you should be drawing attention to your outfit properly, and not by being over the top. As you are slowly becoming an adult, your style should mature along with it.

Let’s talk about Jackets! Ladies, please invest in a nice trench coat. Stay with a neutral, flat colour for your first trench coat so that it matches everything. I own an array of trench coats to suit my moods and outfits. If you want to be adventurous in colours, make sure that your outfit is monochrome and matches or is simple. For example, I own a bright teal trench coat that I wear with a pair of black tights, and a tight black dress, and my Aigle black boots. I suggest investing in a trench coat before buying a peacoat which is shorter. A trench coat will be more versatile so you can wear it onto of any outfit, whether that is a dress, an outfit with pants, or with a skirt.

These ladies, know exactly how to pick a trench coat.

This trench coat even has a cute little pattern on the inside to add a little bit of extra flare!

Remember, to also learn how to tie a bow with your trench sash so that you can create a beautiful tight cynch that shows off your beautiful figure.

A classic trench coat is the perfect coat to go from interview to interview and then out with your friends. If you really want an even more all purpose coat, go for one in black. If you have to go for a fancy event, a black trench coat looks fantastic over any dress!

Last but not least, find a comfortable pair of shoes. Heels are actually very bad for you in terms of support. However, heels force your legs to tighten up, making your legs look longer. If you have to go between interviews or in between events, pack a pair of fold-away flats or flip-flops that can be hidden away in your purse! Sometimes, we don’t want to spend a lot of money on shoes. However, sometimes it’s best to invest in it. A cheap shoe can mean the difference between a bad back, and a fabulous day.

Wedges are also a great option because they offer a lot of extra support. I personally don’t like the look of a wedge, but I am absolutely loving this pair of Ugg’s wedges!

And ladies, you can never have too many pairs of black heels. I mean, there are so many different types of heels; wedges, tall heels, kitten heels, kitten wedges. You name it! But you absolutely need a pair of classic black heels to match with any outfit.

For your casual days, don’t forget about your days off and out with your friends! A comfy simple pair of flats in a nice solid colour is a good staple in your closet.

Finish it off with a cute updo, remembering to keep your hair out of your face. You are so pretty, so why would you ant to hide under it. Hair in your face, also makes you look less professional, and not well kept. So, show off your beautiful face!
