Why you can’t post Covers to Facebook

Tags:

Recently, I got banned from any usage of my Facebook messenger, and posting/liking/commenting on Facebook. Now lately, I’ve been feeling really discouraged with blogging, social media, and Instagram. At this point I don’t even know if anyone is reading this, or if anyone cares to read this. If you are actually reading, drop a comment below so I know.

One of my favourite things about Mondays is actually posting #MusicMonday videos. These all started because my friend Danielle said I don’t sing for her anymore, and I posted a short clip on instagram of me singing for her. I found that my followers were really enjoying my covers. Which was pretty surprising to me. So Music Mondays went really for my followers. I would post a short post on Instagram, and link it to my Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. On September 8th, I received a notification from Facebook that I was banned for 3 days because someone had flagged my video for Copyright Infringement. This is something really serious to me. I NEVER take credit for something that I don’t produce. Any photo that someone took of me, I credit. All of my songs I hashtag with #Cover. I was shocked! Facebook was also not going to give me a chance to defend myself. I filed a counter claim, but I knew that I wasn’t going to hear back from them. I mean, they basically go “Alright, you’ve been flagged! Here’s a 3 day ban. Don’t do it again or we’ll take the account away.”

What Facebook WILL do, is provide you the email of the person who flagged you, and their name. Naturally I emailed this person to plead to my case. So here is the ridiculously long 32 emails between me and David Benjamin of Universal Music. If anything, at least enjoy the hilarity that is this chain.
Spoilers: He tries to be a dick at the end!

Pleasant email exchange with David Benjamin from Universal Music

I mean it starts out pretty okay

a bit annoyed with David Benjamin from Universal Music

…Wait, did he even answer my question? Did he copy and paste this from a “What to do when you get emails” Cheat Sheet.

Trying to keep my cool with David Benjamin from Universal Music

According to Universal Music, they flag you as their “F*CK You” to Facebook.

David Benjamin from Universal Music not impressed

I get why he is doing what he is doing, but he acts like Facebook is this all face of evil that we should all ban against. Like, LOL if you think Facebook cares about you flagging their users.

Facebook has never cared about me posting before. Look, I 100% understand where he is coming from. But this man literally has not even apologized for their part. Like literally a “Sorry this effects you, but we have to” would have been okie dokes with me.

David Benjamin of Universal Music thinks Facebook is evil

Okay, so maybe I’m getting a bit heated here. But, I mean this guy literally is just going “IT’S FACEBOOKS FAULT! IT’S FACEBOOKS FAULT!! MOMMMM!”

Me trying to be diplomatic with David Benjamin from Universal Music

So at this point, my friend Aditi tells me to ask for someone else, because this isn’t getting anywhere. Here he tries to be “cheeky” by pretending that he doesn’t know the customer service contact, and why on earth would I be upset with his “stellar” service?

David Benjamin of Universal Music, Dick? or Super Dick?

So here he tries to make me look dumb about not knowing what Human Resources does.

So at this point, I’ve waited like an hour for this guy to trip up somewhere. So here it is ladies and gents.

Nuff’ Said.

Can you believe David Benjamin of Universal Music sends emails in the late evening on Friday nights?

Did I mention that this email chain was like an hour long, and that he felt the need to email me back an hour later? I didn’t even respond.

As hilarious and infuriating as this email chain was, my point is that I respect copyright laws. But I don’t think that skirting around your part in a situation is the right way to deal with something. Nor’ did I feel like he was being very respectful to me. Maybe I was heated in my emails (I probably was!), but I found out later that this guy is known to be a dick.

This is why you shouldn’t post music directly to Facebook. Don’t risk it with Instagram either (Facebook owns Instagram, so who knows? you might be flagged on that too). This is what happens. So yes, I’m pretty discouraged with blogging, music, and social media. There have just been way too many set backs.
