2017 Marks the year of the Rooster.

There are 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac. Chinese New Year is based on the Lunar calendar which means the actual date of New Year changes every year. Since I have a January birthday I’m born in the year of the Monkey while the rest of my classmates growing up were Roosters.

The story goes that an Emperor held a race with the animals. In first place came the Rat, the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Goat, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog, and the Pig. Originally, the Cat and the Rat reach a river and are unable to cross it during the race. The Rat manages to convince the Ox to give them both a ride. During the ride, the Cat falls asleep, and the Rat pushes him into the river. This is why the cat is not in the zodiac.

I’m wearing a short version of a Cheongsam. Cheong literally means “long” in Cantonese, and Sam means “clothing”. Traditionally it’s made out of silk. The slit might seem sexy, but it’s because silk doesn’t stretch or give.

When you re picking out a Cheongsam, the most important part to fit is actually your chest. I have large boobs, so the cheongsam sits pretty big on me, but at least my bits are comfortable! Having that extra space for your tummy is pretty great during dinner too! My best friend came over to pinch the extra fabric, and I told him, “I still have to eat too.”

A Cheongsam has a mandarin collar, and a lot of beautiful snaps and closures. This is how I got into the dress. Traditionally red is worn, but I really love the look of a sapphire blue on against my skin. This colour is also young, and looks stunning with the silver and blue florals.
