An Interview with a Jewelry Maker: Lovassion
Many of us find it hard to follow our passions and to pursue the things that we really want to do.
Take for instance, this very blog. This blog started as a travel blog that was intended to help me get some reimbursement cash for my AIESEC travels (true story). It is when you start to have a following from other people around the globe; people you have never met who seem to enjoy your gift so much that you start to explore and embrace it. You take a compilation of past experiences and motivations and you make something out of it.
Tingting Lin started her business; Lovassion (on Etsy) after entering another business venture. Having tried another online business model, Tingting found herself devoting an enormous amount of time and effort into something that gave her little reward and little satisfaction. From this experience she learned that she loved business, but that it was important to be doing business in something that she loved.
Tingting, who is in her last year of a Psychology and Sociology Double Major wanted to find a way to create her own rules for a business without having to follow someone else’s path. Voila, Lovassion was born!
What makes Lovassion so special is that Tingting pairs her items with inspirational poetry that she pens herself. Tingting started writing poetry on her website Empower Love during a time where she really needed to believe in herself. She hopes that her poetry will help guide and inspire her readers and customers.
Tingting is also a huge Pinterest fan. She started pinning a lot of DIY items which was how she taught herself to make jewelry. She found it came easily to her, and she found that it was lighting a fire inside of her that her studies weren’t. She then decided to combine both of her interests; poetry and jewelry making into her own business.
Her mission statement is to inspire, share and give. This truly speaks to the name of Lovassion. Tingting and her sister (19) came up with a combination of Love and Passion to reflect what Tingting’s product was all about; loving yourself and following your passion.
Lovassion boasts 30 items having only started in October of 2015. I asked Tingting to share some of her favourite pieces with me. Her items range from $12.40 CAD to $34.45 CAD making them affordable and beautiful gifts; if you’re in a relationship, remember that for Valentine’s Day, Anniversaries, Birthdays, etc.
I was gifted this Bow Ring ($12.40 CAD) by Tingting, which is accompanied by the poem “Dreamer”. This was the first item that Tingting listed on her shop on Etsy. “Dreamer” is about going after what you believe in and to try as hard as you can to get it.
This Wire Flower necklace ($22.05 CAD) is paired with a poem that to Tingting represents never having to try too hard to be someone else, because who you are is already amazing.
This Bar of Gold necklace ($24.45 CAD) is made to order with whatever phrase you want it to read (7 letters and numbers). This one says “Boss”, because let’s be honest, we should all be our own bosses. The Bar of Gold line is the newest item in her store. This is perfect as a gift because you can make it customize it for who you want to give it to.
Diamond ($22.05 CAD) is Tingting’s favourite item (when I first asked her she said she couldn’t pick; I had to pressure her into giving me an answer!). Although not a real diamond (give her a few years, as soon as she takes off we will see diamonds). The poem attached to it is about self love, and about how precious we all are.
Tingting has so much extra love that she includes hand written notes with her shipments, and even the items are packaged with extra love and care. The rim of the box reads “handmade with love”.
Definitely be on the lookout for this up and coming jewelry maker. She has gained a happy amount of customers (some even ordering from the UK!). Tingting’s dream is to have her items in her own store. I would pick these pieces, why wouldn’t you?
