Adult Life: Men

Tags:

One of the scariest things for a new grad is the dreaded “adult life”. What exactly is that anyway? It’s that scary little corner and pocket in time where you’re supposed to decide what you plan to do with the rest of your life. As a recent grad and College Fashionista Intern (My Link for College Fashionista if you are interested) I have been asked to give a lot of Fashion advice lately. So, why not start with how to dress for the scary future?

Are you Ready Boys?

My number one tip for the boys (excuse me, Men) is to start investing in the 3 most important items that you should have in your closet!

1. Belt

Let’s start off with breaking down the Belt! First of all, men you need at least one black belt and one brown belt. If you are worried about spending the extra cash invest in something like a reversible belt!

I convinced my friend to buy this reversible belt from Calvin Klein. This is a great way for you to kill 2 birds with 1 stone. the buckle swivels around for the wearer to change between both colours.

2. Shoes

Everyone should always be on the hunt for the perfect pair of comfortable work shoes. I know that I personally have 5 pairs of black heels and counting.

Men, you absolutely must match your belt and shoes. The only exception that I gave for this certain photo shoot was when my friend’s bowtie matched his belt instead of his shoes. The whole point of matching these items is because it breaks up your body into two sections. If your shoes don’t match your belt, it is okay as long as you balance the colour out on the top with a bowtie. I would advise against a matching tie because the tie is longer and draws attention towards your torso. You want to create the feeling of clean lines.

Now that I have said your belt should match your shoes, this means that you should invest in a pair of brown, and black shoes. However, one of the newest trends are grey shoes! So, if we’re keeping count, that’s 2 belts and 3 pairs of shoes. A good trick for shoes is to find one pair that is super comfortable and just buy it out in the other colours!

3. Ties/Bow ties

Nothing says “I am a Dapper Man” than a nice classy tie, or a bow tie. They truly elevate and complete an outfit. This is also your chance to add a little bit of a personal touch in your outfits. Although, if you’re going to an investment banking interview I have been informed to NEVER wear a red tie! Since red is a power colour, in the investment banking world, you think that you are too good for the firm/job you are applying to. So just be mindful my lovely new adults of the positions you are applying to.

Having said that, what’s cuter than a nice black bow tie or a patterned tie? The one featured in the image has dogs on it!

These are the 3 staples of a Gentleman’s closet. Of course, you should always have nice dress shirts, a nice pair of khaki pants and cute sweaters/cardigans to wear over your outfits! But, these 3 items are the trifecta of dapper-ness.

However, let’s not forget the watch. A Gentleman must always be on time. Although metal watches are classic, they tend to be more expensive than the newest emerging “classy” trend; the leather strapped watch. If you aren’t able to afford a more expensive watch then invest in a watch that looks classic. They can easily be confused with vintage pieces making you the epitome of class

Now Gentleman, you are ready for the adult life.
