I Finished school…again!

First of all…let’s throw our hands up in the air for me finishing an 18 month accelerated diploma!

For those of you who don’t know, about a month after my undergrad finished, I started a Marketing in Fashion for Entertainment Program. After my undergrad I had two options,
1) Find a Job or 2) Get my education on.

I distinctly remember taking the bus like 2.5 hours out to Tycos Road which is where all of the fashion wholesalers are on my day off from school. I was at this wholesaler for an interview for an internship. At this point I had decided that I wanted to work in Public Relations in the fashion industry, with a focus on Event Planning. I wanted more fashion experience so I had applied to this wholesaler. I asked her at the end what she thought about my interview, and the interviewer told me she felt I interviewed well, but that she wished I had more fashion experience. Sitting on the bus ride home, I noticed a bus add for my school and a “fashion marketing” program. I looked them up the next day and got a call within days of filling out a request for more information.

I have a policy about always telling the truth, so if you ask me how I really felt about my diploma I’ll answer if you ask. However, I don’t think that this is the focus of this article. I want to share with you the feeling of being done.

I don’t actually really feel done, because now I have to start looking for a job. What I did learn though was because I already have my HBA, this will help me with my job search. It helps keep me “competitive” which is what the job market is now. I can’t deny that I did learn useful things from amazing instructors, but I can’t say that I feel fully prepared for what’s ahead. I believe that it is because this path that I’ve chosen requires a lot more hours of work/learning experience. This makes me afraid for my future. I have no problems with paying my dues, because I really think you have to work hard and work smart to get where you want to be. I just want to make sure that while paying my dues, I can afford to pay my bills. It takes a lot of hard work to get to a place where you don’t have to look at your phone on the weekends.

If anything I think that going through an intensive program helped remind myself about keeping one’s integrity. I never once presented myself as someone else to anyone. I felt proud that my teachers acknowledged that too. It’s nice to hear that the instructors I respected the most personally let me know that they believed I would be successful. I’m proud of myself for finishing up the extra schooling and it really does make me more competitive now in the marketing field.

One of the questions I get asked a lot though is whether or not I regret doing my undergrad. This always reminds me of how my mother taught me that nothing you’ve learned ever goes to waste. In my undergrad I took a theatre productions course that taught me how to use power tools, and set up my own lights. I think that the biggest mistake that you can make is to shut your mind off to learning experiences. You’re going to learn some pretty useless things in life, but at least you learned it. You’d be pretty surprised how many times I’ve used the proper rubber cement application process. Hey, and ask anyone I loved my undergrad. I was literally there Saturday volunteering all day.

I’m glad that I’m done school, and I’m thankful for the friends that I’ve made along the way. Now I’ve decided to take some time off for myself. All throughout high school and undergrad, I never really took any time off. I always did summer school (I like to get my education on), or I was in Taiwan doing my AIESEC internship. I love to keep productive, but now I want to do some different things. I’m going to be taking a Salsa dancing class with my bestie, I’m going to finally finish my Driver’s License stuff, I want to learn a new language, and do way more blogging.

I’m excited to see what the future has for me.
