So it’s your best friend’s birthday and you have no idea what to get her anymore. I’ve known my best friend since the third grade. After all of these years, you kind of run out of ideas for gifts.
I’ve stayed over at my bestie’s apartment twice and I’ve noticed that she 1) Likes to collect Starbucks mugs and 2) She doesn’t really have enough mugs to entertain from one set
SO I decided to DIY some marble cups for her!
I paired 2 colours together for each cup, and added gold nail polish to each. Fill a container with warm water, and add a droplet or two of nail polish. It will rise to the top of the water and spread out into a nice film. Pop any polish bubbles so that you get a pretty film. Repeat with different colours.
Dip the cups into the water in one quick motion to your desired line. To make sure I was hitting the same spot overtime, I put the cup in my waterproof container first and then added water to where I wanted my marble to end. I removed the cup. I then drew a line with a sharpie outside of the container so I would always know where to fill the water up to.
I specifically had to get my brother to order this Dishwasher-safe Mod Podge on Amazon Prime. It’s way too expensive in store. After I let the cups dry, I used a large paint brush to apply the mod lodge. I turned the cups upside down on a sheet of parchment paper to dry.
Voila! They are done.
Here are a list of tips that you should know
1. Buy the mugs from the dollar store!
2. If you screw up (which I did on the orange and yellow cup) you can remove the polish with polish remover before it dries and start over
3. Use a disposable container to dunk your mugs in because the polish will destroy the container. I’m using a large family sized no name ice-cream container
4. The Mod Podge takes 28 days to cure! When I read that on the back I was like “WHAT THE HECK?” so time your DIY with when you need to give it
5. If you need a polish, buy what ever is on sale. I got the gold at walmart for $2 CAD
Now you’re ready to give the best gift!
Which cup was your favourite? Send me pictures of your DIYs!
