My friend and I took an early morning trip to the Markham Sunflower Fields (currently closed for the season) this year. I was dying to get back into shooting some content and doing a bit of modelling myself.
First Arrivals at the Sunflower Farm
When we arrived at the farm, we were the first ones there, with the exception of one tour bus full of seniors who spoke Cantonese. It was surprisingly hot that morning, and we ended up having to shoot around the seniors, waiting for them to walk down the trails. This gave us time to find the perfect framing for the shots.
Wide Angle Shots
I wanted to make sure I still got some wide angle shots so that I can capture more flowers. Surprisingly, there was a little hill in the background as well.
Lost In the Field
to obtain these shots, I’m actually sitting on a bay of hale. I had my friend shoot this set with the flowers framing the camera to create the illusion that I’m inside the field.
Swinging Into Things
This picturesque farm also had a little prop swing for you to sit on and shoot. I took some full frame photos, but found the close-ups looked better. These swings are hard to balance on, so make sure that you have your footing before shooting. You’ll also be able to utilize the ropes as props.
How I Edited My Photos
I picked specific colours and tones in my photos to adjust everything to be a bit cooler. Although, the final effect still had warmth in it (it is a sunflower field), I was editing to combat the bright and hot af yellow of the sun.
I didn’t like how yellow the leaves came out so I changed them to a more blue-green, and desaturated them to look natural. I find when leaves look brown-yellow-green, they look like they’re dying.
Additionally, I picked out the yellow and orange tones so that the sunflowers could pop. I used Photoshop’s generative expand, to make the image larger. It added a few more flowers and gave me more sky.
I’ve also gone in and touched up my skin.
